Hygge is a word in Danish and Norwegian that describes a mood of coziness and "comfortable conviviality" with feelings of wellness and contentment (Wikipedia).

Hygge Winter gardens Gardens is a term we use at Greene Haven Garden Company to describe those special outside spaces which give you the calm comfort of nature, combined with warmth from a fire, fresh, crisp air and some moody lighting. Throw in a soft blanket, a hot chocolate and good company (or a good book ) and you can truly embrace this special, often under-utilised green space through the colder, darker months.

Even with the nights drawing in, your outdoor space, whether it is a small terrace, patio area or garden can provide the setting for an enjoyable bit of ‘me time’.

Fire pits have become increasingly popular in recent years. Providing effective warmth, a golden mood-boosting glow, a distinctive scent and crackling sound at a price and design to suit you and your budget. Fire pits can be free standing and therefore moveable, or, our favourite, fire pits embedded into a bespoke table. Fire pits also double up as a cooking facility for wintery comfort food. There’s never a bad time to BBQ ;)

Greene Haven Garden Company recently created a bespoke pergola and decked area in a small garden in Oxton on the Wirral. We discussed the landscaping project carefully with the client and it was decided that a small fire pit would finish the look and functionality of the space off. We lovingly created a bespoke fire pit base and out client was thrilled with the results- she is now enjoying this newly landscaped area all-year round.

Outdoor lighting is a great way to bring warmth, interest and focus in your garden during the colder months and they can be enjoyed at night outside and when sitting inside and looking out. With many lights now being battery operated and on a timer, they can provide a cost effective Hygge lifestyle feature to any garden space. String lights can be easily wrapped around trees, draped across pergolas or even hung from drain pipes to create that warm feeling.

We all know fresh air is good for us, and so much healthier and cheaper than central heating. Put on a few extra layers, step outside with a warm blanket, light the fire and enjoy your outside haven that little bit more!

Is your Garden ready for the colder months?

Autumn is fast approaching and here at Greene Haven Garden Company on the Wirral peninsula, we have been receiving lots of enquiries about garden clearances and garden tidies ready for the winter months. It’s really useful to ‘put your garden to bed’ for the Winter as it will enable your flowering plants to thrive in the spring, by pruning them and removing dead heads. Looking carefully at what has grown well (maybe too well) over the Spring/Summer and checking whether it is interfering with other plants and stopping them from growing properly. Pulling out perennials that have done their beautiful job over the Summer months, making room for fresh colours next year.

Garden furniture will benefit from a good clean, starting with a gentle brush to remove unwanted debris and then a gentle clean with a kitchen detergent and either air dry or use a towel. A suitable cover for the furniture is highly recommended to protect your furniture for years to come. Early Autumn can be a really useful time to have a lawn treatment- often in the summer sun, lawns can become quite dehydrated and in need of extra nutrients to get them thorough the winter months. This can be done by yourself with an off the shelf product or trust Greene Haven or other professional companies to do the job for you. Patios can be brushed and cleaned to protect the surface and pots can be moved to protect them from frost. A shed, outhouse or garage will suffice.

Make a list

Don’t forget to check in and see how you’re doing. Just because you don’t achieve the big goals right away doesn’t mean you’re not making progress.

Reward yourself

When you succeed in achieving a goal, be it a big one or a small one, make sure to pat yourself on the back.
